Ms. Wixted and Linda were delighted to welcome back our wonderful 5th and 6th class this September. Everyone is settling back so well and we have had a great start to the new academic year! We were so happy to be reunited with all our friends.
In English we have been working on making predictions and recount writing. We particularly loved ‘One Boy’s War’ by Lynn Huggins-Cooper, which linked well with projects 5th class completed based on WW1. We also had an exciting visit from parent Joey O’Shea who gave a tactile presentation to the children, with lots of memorabilia from WW2 to explore. We also wrote some fantastic autobiographies and had some author’s chair time to show off our super writing.
We marked our favourite academic week of the year (aka Maths Week) with plenty of fun, hands-on activities. We constructed 2D shapes using match sticks, explored real life examples of symmetry in the environment, engaged in daily Maths puzzles and competed in an epic Maths quiz from 3rd- 6thclass. To finish the week, we created remarkable powerpoint presentations showcasing the everyday use of Maths in a variety of jobs- such as teaching, sports, engineering and nursing. We also celebrated Space Week by learning about gravity and creating ‘Egg-stronauts’ which we launched outside. We had a limited amount of materials to create an effective system to protect the eggs. There was lots of excitement when all 6 eggs were returned in perfect condition after their launch!!
Don cheachtanna Gaeilge, rinneamar dul siar bunaithe ar ‘An Aimsir Chaite’. We also focused on the themes of ‘Mé Féin’ and ‘Ar Scoil’. We learned vocabulary based on our personality traits and created art which displayed some of our unique traits on a rainbow. We also learned about‘ Tíortha na hEorpa’ and created posters with the names of other European countries to display in our classroom.
In PE, we worked on the strand of athletics. We completed relays, hurdles, javelin throws and long jump techniques. This was super fun! We also attended Gaelic football lessons each Monday and played a variety of mini games against each other. Our girls competed in a blitz in Rathkeale on Tuesday. We represented our school so well and showed great sportsmanship on our day out.
We have been very busy doing lots of art activities. We created autumnal backgrounds using paint, focusing on vertical and horizontal brush strokes to create a desired effect and then drew our trees. We also did a ‘finish the picture’ lesson, sketching Autumn fields and drew some amazing self-portraits.
6th class have started weekly ‘VEX Robotics’ preparation with Ms. Mullane. We had great fun last week with our ‘Anything But A Schoolbag’ day which helped to raise funds for parts needed to build our robot. Both 5th and 6th class are really enjoying their ‘Hour of Code’ each Monday afternoon, where they delve into a new programming project each week.
Have a lovely midterm and enjoy the break! Ms. Wixted
