What a wonderful run up to the Summer holidays we have had! Last week, our marathon relay fundraiser took place. 4th class did lots of running, adding to the distance of a marathon for the school. They enjoyed some well-deserved ice creams in the sun after the relay, and had a great surprise watching the staff compete in inflatable suits! This week they competed in the O’Kelly hurling league and O’Donoghoe football league. They really enjoyed these blitzes and had a great time showing off their skills to the younger classes.
Summer is a lovely time of the year to create beautiful artwork. We further explored our theme of Africa by painting sunsets and using stencils to create shadows of animals and trees. These turned out beautifully so we decided to display them on our classroom window for all to see. They created very detailed projects all about ‘Zambia’ and were able to ‘teach the teacher’ with their presentations, as I am volunteering there this summer. We took inspiration from our Gaeilge stories on ‘Lá Cois Farraige’ to paint bright, colourful pictures. The Gaeilge stories included details about swimming in the sea and playing games on the sand. We used dictionaries and the knowledge of our briathra learned earlier in the year to help us write the paragraphs.
The class have worked very hard at their Maths and English this year. They explored the topic of report writing throughout June and enjoyed putting a piece together based on Limerick’s recent Munster hurling final win in Thurles! The children took part in Maths games and completed revision booklets to revise all of the topics covered in the curriculum this year. We designed fabulous Maths board games which we then played with 3rd class to showcase their work. We enjoyed other activities too such as a Maths trail, budgeting for a summer barbeque and designing a ‘Crack the Code’ using long multiplication. Well done Rang a Ceathair on all the progress you have made in these subjects since September!
May and June were very active months. We spent time in the sunshine in the Astro Turf with our hurling coach, practicing new skills and playing matches. We also took part in 6 weeks of swimming lessons. It was amazing to see the progress made in this time, especially by our beginners! We were also fortunate to practice our balance and flexibility through our gymnastics lessons too.
We celebrated the 70th anniversary of the school at the end of May. 4th class collaboratively wrote a verse for our school anthem which was all about playing sport at school. It was then recorded during their ‘Music Generation’ time with Aoife and Nora, and put together with the other class’s recordings. We also created beautiful artwork based on our favourite memory of school, which was sold at the art exhibition that weekend.
Children also took part in ‘genius hour’ over the month of June. This gave us the opportunity to select a topic of our choice to research on Friday afternoons. We then created a project all about it. We presented some brilliant projects all about ‘The History of Hurling’, ‘Mountains around the World’, ‘Tennis’ and ‘Farming’ to name a few. It was a wonderful way to share our knowledge with each other and teach each other new information.
Our school tour to Just 4 Kids camp in Mary Immaculate College was thoroughly enjoyable. The children took part in obstacle course activities and games. It was a successful day out overall and an excellent way to finish out a busy school year. A special thank you to Sharon and Catherine for all of the hard work they have done for us this year, caring for and helping the children in 4th class. I have really enjoyed teaching 4th and wish them all the best next year! Have a lovely Summer everyone!
