Fifth and Sixth Class Christmas Update 2024

What a busy and exciting term we’ve had in 5th and 6th class!

English

In English, we focused on Persuasive Writing, including a lively walking debate on whether real Christmas trees are better than artificial ones. We explored Christmas advertisements from An Post, Woodies, and M&S, analysing features like target audience, product messaging, and emotional appeal. We even wrote persuasive pieces debating whether children should be allowed to choose their own subjects in school.

Maths

Our budgeting skills came to life as we planned a holiday for Ms. Wixted during the Christmas break. Staying within a budget, we investigated flights, accommodation, and even included fun activities to ensure the best value. It was a competitive and exciting challenge! Alongside this, we tackled tricky topics like fractions and problem-solving, and Ms. Wixted is so proud of the progress we’ve made.

Gaeilge

In Gaeilge, we made fantastic progress learning the 11 irregular verbs in the Aimsir Chaite, and we’ve grown much more confident using this tense. Our vocabulary has expanded, and it’s great to see how our oral Irish (teanga ó bhéal) has improved. This term, we explored the themes of ‘Bia’ and ‘An Nollaig’, listened to captivating stories from Bua na Cainte, and enjoyed interactive games like Biongó.

Science

During Science Week, we experimented with chemical reactions by mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, inflating a balloon in the process. We were amazed to see the carbon dioxide produced quench a flame. 5th class researched scientists of their choice, using school laptops to create fascinating PowerPoint presentations, while 6th class worked hard on VEX Robotics. It was wonderful to see everyone presenting their projects to other classes in the school.

Art

Art was a big highlight this term! For the TLC Christmas Tree competition, we crafted decorations using recycled materials, including a choir of carol singers made from cardboard inserts. We also sent beautiful handmade Christmas cards to patients in St. Camillus’ Hospital and Corbally Nursing Home. The pupils were so enthusiastic, many even created extra cards, spreading festive cheer with their stunning designs.

Christmas Show

The Christmas season came alive with our show, ‘The Inn Crowd’. 5th and 6th class pupils showcased their talents in singing, dancing, and acting, putting in tremendous effort and enthusiasm during rehearsals. The performance was a huge success—well done to everyone involved!

Special Outings

This term, we were lucky to enjoy two special outings:

• The Salesians TY show, ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ which was a fantastic experience.

• The hilarious pantomime, ‘Mother Goose,’ in UL, which was the perfect way to end our term on a high note.

A Big Thank You

A special thank you to our wonderful SNA Linda, who is always so kind and helpful. We’re also very grateful for the support of Ms. Ruddle, Ms. Quinn, and Mr. Sparling, who worked with us throughout the term.

We wish all our pupils and families a wonderful and safe Christmas. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the New Year, refreshed and ready for another exciting term ahead!
