Welcome to 2nd class!
We are delighted to be back in school with all our friends and what a busy term we have had.
In Literacy, we really enjoyed listening to ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. We used the comprehension strategies of prediction, visualising and making connections throughout the book. Taking inspiration from the story, we created our own peculiar characters and used Lego to design our own chocolate factories. 2 class are greatwriters and loved working on recount writing this term. We also wrote fantasticreports on our pets.
In Geography, we looked at a map of the world and identified all the continents. We created our own giant map which looks really cool. We found Ireland on the map and located our own county of Limerick too. We constructed amazing globes which are hanging proudly in our classroom. We talked about the weather and some extreme weather conditions. We learned how thunder and lightning are formed and how to be safe during a storm. We listening to the song ‘Africa’ by the musical group ‘Perpetuum Jazzile’. They used body percussion to form all the sounds of a storm so we created our own storms using body percussion too. It was a lot of fun.
We love Maths in class and we reallyenjoyed taking part in Maths Week. We had fun with problem-solving activities,a Maths trail around the school, Maths games and much more.
We explored nature in Science this term. We learned the names of native and non-native trees in Ireland. We tried to identify the trees on our school grounds and did leaf rubbings with the leaves we collected. We learned all about environmental changes in autumn and the unusual hibernation methods of some animals. We sponge painted to create fantastic hibernation art work. Take a look at the photos below!
During Climate Action Week, we talked about global warming, how it occurs and its effects on the earth. We read the story ‘We Want Our Park Back’ by Oisín McGann and created a list of simple actions we can take in school and at home to help look after our planet.
Kilcornan were very lucky to have a skipping workshop visit our school earlier this month. We love to skip and our instructor Lee taught us many different skipping techniques. We continued to practise our skills in our PE lessons also.
The lead up to Halloween was a lot of fun. We learned the poem ‘There’s a Witch Outside My Window’, the song ‘The Skeleton Stomp’ and made cute witches and cats using toilet roll holders. We wore our spooky costumes to school, played Halloween games and enjoyed a movie and treats to end what was a great term.
Check back in with us soon.
