Senior Infants Christmas Update 2024

We have had another wonderful half-term in Senior Infants. We have been busy learning everyday. We always try to remember to use ‘Kind Hands, Kind Feet, Kind Word’ when we play together in the classroom and outside in the yard.

We celebrated Science Week. We did lots of experiments. We enjoyed behaving like scientists. We made predictions, observed the outcome and recorded our results. We also watched our teacher demonstrate how to light a light bulb using a battery and two wires. We got the chance to work together in a group to make our own circuit. The screams of delight when we make the light bulb light up were something else!

In SESE, we examined pictures of houses in the past. We compared rooms from old houses and new houses and we were surprised to learn that the bathroom used to be outside! We enjoyed a seasonal History lesson on toys. We examined toys from the past and even watched an old episode of ‘The Late Late Toy Show’, when Gay Byrne was the presenter. It was so funny to seethe types of toys that were popular when our parents were small!

In Literacy we are all doing wonderful reading everyday. We are all getting more confident and fluent with our reading. Reading s such an important skill and we love DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read)during the day – we get to relax with a book on the couch or carpet with a cushion. We also did persuasive writing as part of our literacy lessons. We had to persuade Jingle and Belle to pay a visit to one of our houses before they go back to stay with Santa on Christmas Eve!

In Maths Senior Infants enjoyed learning the Story of7 through The Story of Seven.! We have also been learning all about 3D shapes using lots of hands-on materials and activities in groups and pairs. Transformations is new to Senior Infants this year and we spent lots of time working with shapes and playing games to help us learn different directions and movements.

Sa Ghaeilge, we really enjoy learning new words and phrases. We always make an effort to use these phrases throughout the day. We learned a lot of vocabulary for An Nollag! We played Biongó, made cartaí Nollaig and read stories. Bhí alán spraoi againn!!

During Anti-Bullying week we discussed how we should all be kind to one another and what to do if we feel we are being bullied. We also discussed safety around electricity in the home.

In PE we have been focusing on the dance strand of the curriculum. We learned our dances for the Christmas show with Ciara and Emma. We also learned new dance routines in the classroom. These help us move our body in new ways and sometimes we just like to freestyle!

We celebrated Christmas Jumper Day in honour of the Children’s Health Foundation. The school raised €388.50 in total. It was a lovely way to raise money and remember those less fortunate than ourselves.

Our class was lucky enough to be visited by Santa’s Scout elves, Jingle and Belle. Mrs. Gleeson and Mrs. Wallace were relieved that they were good elves and behaved themselves for the most part!

We went to the Concert Hall in UL to see the panto, Mother Goose. We had a great time! Some of the characters were so funny and we really enjoyed dancing and singing along to the songs. We also had great fun on the bus. We realized that we could see over the hedges from the bus

We have had such a wonderful time preparing and performing our Christmas Show, Nativity News! We loved our singing and dancing lessons with Ciara and Emma. It was a great experience being on stage again and we were delighted to have all our families in the audience. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful facility with a big stage.
