Our final half-term has been a busy one!
We learned about ‘buachaill bó’! Bhí an buachaill bó ag marcaíocht. We played ‘Deir Ó Grádaigh’ and loved it when Mrs. Gleeson called out ‘Bígí ag marcaíocht’! We read a story about a ‘cailín bó’ called Ordinary Audrey. It was set in the ‘Wild West’ and there were some outlaws causing trouble. Our ‘cailín bó’ was the renamed ‘Extraordinary Audrey’ after her clever antics!
We learned how to draw ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo’, the main character in another story we loved. He was a very bold rabbit and was turned into a goonie at the end. We didn’t know what a goonie was until we saw his transformation! We all did an amazing job at copying the shapes to draw both characters!
We used our drawings as a stimulus for shared writing. We brainstormed our ideas and some people made the Goonie into a kind character, while others gave him mean characteristics. We had lots of fun sharing our stories!
We have been playing ‘Headbanz’ for fun, but really we are learning to ask the right questions and follow clues. It has been wonderful to play together, taking turns and listening to each other, and also use or oral language skills.
We have been playing lots of games during ‘Maths for Fun!’ time! We played snakes and ladders, which involves lot of counting forwards and backwards. We played with tangrams to build pictures and shape puzzles. We also played lots of fun physical counting games like ‘Blastoff’ and ‘Higher or Lower’.
In SESE, we learned about different bodies of water (stream, river, canal, sea) and how to recognise them. We also did a survey with a grandparent about what life was like when they were our age. It was great to learn things about our grandparents when they were children and hear what games they liked to play. We learned about magnets and carried out investigations with different materials to see what items were magnetic. We were surprised by some of the outcomes! We also got to play with iron filings and magnetic cars.
We all helped to make a wormery. We needed different layers so Senior Infants collected lots of small rocks and pebbles, first class dug upsoil using spoons and Mrs. Gleeson gave us sand. We layered these in a pattern before adding in some food for the worms – we used some banana peel and leaves. We also sprayed water on every layer. Then we added our worms. We kept the wormery in a dark press and checked on them every couple of days. It was amazing to see the tracks that they made mixing each layer.
We have been enjoying lots of time outside, taking advantage of the lovely weather. We are so lucky to be able to use the astro turf for PE and the whole field for nature walks. We love searching for minibeasts and examining wildflowers.
Our ‘fun week’ was brilliant. We wore our own clothes, which was a novelty! On Tuesday, we all took part in potato and spoon races and sack races. We had so much fun! In the afternoon, we went up the GAA field and took part in a penalty shoot-out and an obstacle course! Sixth class had prepared a goody bag for us, which was a great treat!
On Thursday, we saw Peter the magician. He was AMAZING!! He turned a picture of a bird into a real bird and changed a dove into a rabbit! On Friday, we were visited by the ice-cream van after lunch!
We have had a great time in Senior Infants and 1st class and are ready for summer holidays!
