We have had another busy term here in Senior Infants and 1st class. Our classroom has been a hive of activity since Christmas as we have been learning lots through Aistear and SESE and incorporating what we have learned into our Writing, Art and Gaeilge lessons. Lots of people have complimented the beautiful displays we have created in our classroom! It has been a great team effort, well done everyone!
When we returned after Christmas we focused on the theme of winter. We learned all about emperor penguins and Antarctica. We created an Antarctic scene in our classroom and we each drew an emperor penguin to add to the display. We were so proud of our drawings. We focused on Éadaí in Gaeilge and painted and coloured hataí agus lámhainní. We also put our beautiful handwriting to the test and wrote stories using the title “The Lost Mitten”. Mrs. Gleeson and Mrs. Conway were so impressed with our elegant penmanship.
We learned the importance of recycling by reading the story The Messy Magpie. The story really made us aware of how rubbish can harm animals and our environment. We started to spot the recycling symbol on lots of everyday items and we will always make sure these items go into the correct bins. It was great to hear that so many of us pay regular visits to the local recycling centres, all the boys and girls in our classroom are doing so much to save the environment.
It was then time to start learning all about spring, again we managed to incorporate this into lots of subject areas. We loved learning all about the different farm animals and just how busy the farm is in spring. We wrote facts about spring into our SESE copies and we matched baby animals to their mothers. First Class learned the male, female and baby names of several farm animals as well as the features of different farm animals. We presented all we had learned in a fun way by hosting a News Broadcast in class which even included some advertisements, we excelled at our oral language and drama skills while doing this. It was great fun! To finish off the theme of spring we collaboratively painted a spring frieze for display in our classroom, it included baby calves, lambs and chicks as well as a colourful rainbow and beautiful green fields. We were delighted with the finished piece!
We have enjoyed a variety of special days and special weeks this term. We loved welcoming our grandparents to our classroom for Grandparents’ Day and getting to perform a song for them in the hall. They loved the art work we had on display for them too. For Wellness Week it was a real treat to get to bring in our cosy blankets and pillows for mediation time and we enjoyed bringing in our books from home for DEAR time that week too. On Pancake Tuesday the 6th Class treated us to some delicious pancakes and other treats, they were so yummy! For Engineers Week we made paper airplanes, it was very exciting getting to try these out in our groups to see which plane would go the furthest!
Seachtainna Gaeilge was a busy week at school. We loved making an extra effort with our cúpla focal and had so much fun learning the haka as Gaeilge. Ms. Wixted and her class helped us to learn the Irish dance, Shoe the Donkey which we performed with the whole school during Lá Glas.
We are delighted to have started Aistear in the classroom. Our learning in Aistear is hands-on and in small groups. We love learning through active play! Some of our topics so far have included Transport, Houses and Homes, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Our stations change each week but include a mixture of small world/roleplay, numeracy, literacy, SESE, and plasticine.
We have had a brilliant time completing our Run around Europe challenges. We started out running to London. When we reached our target of 454km we moved to Warsaw which was much farther and lastly onto Oslo. We loved our running breaks and did lots of mental maths adding up our kilometres every day! First Class also helped out when it came to adding up our totals as they have just recently started addition with regrouping!
We have really enjoyed the lead up to Easter. We have been busy making Easter baskets in Art as part of Aistear, reading and learning all about Holy Week and we even got to enjoy an Easter Egg hunt outside in the glorious sunshine. We are so thankful to have Karina in our classroom too who is so helpful when we are doing all our activities.
We hope everyone has a lovely Easter!
