National Tree Day was held in Ireland on 5th October. To celebrate it, the Green Schools committee planted a Hazel Tree at the front of the school grounds. Hazel trees are very common in Ireland and have many uses. Hazelnuts grow on these trees and squirrels are great at gathering them as soon as they are ripe and ready to eat. Field mice love them too. The trees can be used for basket-making, food for animals and in many crafts and recipes. By planting this hazel tree, we are providing food for animals and a home for many insects. We are looking forward to welcoming squirrels and lots of other living things!
