Nollaig Shona Daoibh ó Rang aTrí!
The children have worked super hard this term and are looking forward to a well-deserved break! The Christmas Show was a huge success and they should be proud of their performance!
This past month, we completed a study on Emperor Penguins and Antarctica which linked into lots of subject areas. We learned about Antarctica in Geography lessons, Emperor Penguins in Science. We read and discussed a story called ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ in English and took notes of interesting facts and information. We then drew baby emperor penguins with charcoal, using a smudging technique and glued them to a beautiful, icy blue background. We had lots of fun with this theme.
In English,we have been working on our Persuasive Writing. We took part in our very own Junior Dragon’s Den. The children used old cereal boxes as inspiration to come up with their very own cereal. They had to think of a brand name, flavour, price and about the nutritional value of their product. They then wrote out their persuasive texts in their copies and read them aloud to the class, aiming to convince their teacher and peers to buy their cereal. It was very interesting to see their imaginations flow!
Sticking with the winter theme, we also wrote Christmas Senses Poems which we shared with our classmates. Ms.McMahon was very impressed with our poetry writing skills. We made some beautiful artwork including bears in Christmas jumpers which linked in with Christmas Jumper Day. We even designed special Christmas cards which were delivered to the residents in Askeaton Nursing home to wish them a safe and happy Christmas.
We have been busy learning our multiplication tables all term and work hard daily practicing them in class. We particularly enjoy playing Tables Games like ‘Hit the Button’ and‘King/Queen of the Tables’ and ‘Daily Ten’. Knowing our Times Tables well has really helped with our maths work in Fractions and Problem Solving this month.
We were lucky enough to get to go on two school trips this month. Firstly, we were invited to watch ‘Back to the 80’s’ in L.I.T which was performed by students in Pallaskenry secondary school. It was fantastic! We also got to attend the Panto in Mary Immaculate College to see Aladdin. It was an excellent day out for the whole school.
3rd class completed the Hot Chocolate Challenge. Through hard work and good behaviour, they collectively earned a delicious mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows, a candy cane and a chocolate on their last day of school. Maith Sibh !
We would like to give a special word of thanks to our wonderful SNA Marian who is in our classroom each morning and afternoon. She is super helpful and so kind to us and we are lucky to have her.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year!
